Test & Measurement

Adhesion tests provide accurate measurements of specific properties of a substance. Many adhesives are evaluated according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. Depending on volatility, each adhesive has a range of different properties including adhesion, pull-off strength, and viscosity. ASTM develops and regulates internationally recognized standards to help companies test adhesives and corresponding components. The adhesive material classification system includes standard specifications and guides for many types of adhesives.

Adhesives are tested on a variety of common materials including metal, wood, and plastic. Depending on the adherent, different tests and regulations apply. Adhesive bond is examined through an extensive range of standardized processes. Peel strength, shear strength, and coating cohesion tests help determine the physical properties of an adhesive. By determining the failure point, test results give valuable information for future product use. Other test measurements may include tackiness, creep, cure behavior, and tensile strength.
